Employing miniscule brushstrokes to denote each hair on a dog, petal on a flower, thread on a gown, Bockler’s nearly obsessive attention to detail creates alluring scenes of foreboding circumstances wrapped in love, chaos, and revenge. Stan Mack’s “Real Life Funnies” chronicled the every day, the extraordinary, and the downright outlandish lives of New Yorkers, capturing their sardonic humor, sexual shenanigans, and exotic obsessions. Every story was told entirely in the subjects’ own words. And New Yorkers ate it up.

For the first time, a significant collection of those comic strips has been included in one volume, Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies. With a foreword by Jake Tapper and afterword by Jeannette Walls, this collection will be treasured not only by the strip’s devoted followers and comics fans, but everyone fascinated by this revolutionary period in the life of the World’s Greatest City.”

Parish Hall, St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, 131 E 10th Street, Manhattan
“This event is co-sponsored by the Walt Whitman Initiative.

Unbeknownst to most New Yorkers, a literary landmark lies beneath Greenwich Village’s stretch of Broadway: Pfaff’s Cellar Saloon, located below the twin tenements at 645-647 Broadway between 1859 – 1864, was America’s first bohemian hotspot and home to one of the country’s first gay men’s clubs, the “Fred Gray Association.” Walt Whitman was a loyal Pfaffian who met many young men in this space, and was here inspired to write several of his most inspirational poems. Come celebrate the legacy of Pfaff’s with a reading and discussion, led by Whitman-scholar Karen Karbiener, of Whitman’s poetic cluster, “Live Oak, with Moss,” and find out how you can help honor the legacy of this unlandmarked, unprotected historical treasure.

After the reading and discussion, join Karen for a walk to the site of Pfaff’s

The nonprofit NYC-based Walt Whitman Initiative joins Village Preservation in its efforts to celebrate and help preserve sites of historical significance such as the twin tenement that once housed Pfaff’s Cellar; please visit their website to learn more about their initiatives.”

The best gardeners are keen observers and careful listeners to their surroundings–our time in the garden space will be a balance of active planting and stewardship with slow and mindful time spent with the space we are cultivating.

Ottendorfer Library, 135 Second Avenue, Manhattan
“As the Ottendorfer Library celebrates its 140th anniversary this December, we will celebrate the German heritage of the East Village that brought it to fruition. When the revolutions of 1848 throughout Europe failed, a number of young German-speaking revolutionaries fled to the East Village, which became the largest German-language speaking community in the world after Berlin and Vienna. With the freedoms of the New World, Little Germany or Kleindeutschland as it became known was a crucible for their energies and talents. On this tour, we will walk to places where Europe’s failed revolutionaries made their mark and consider their legacy. Bring your walking shoes and a friend! The tour will last approximately one hour and thirty minutes and cover just over a mile. It will end at Tompkins Square Park. Please check in at the front desk at least 15 minutes before the walk is scheduled to begin. This event will be rescheduled in the case of rain.”

Editor’s Note: Hi NYC, the Cheap Chick in the City is VERY pleased to announce that she has found additional employment and a temporary solution to her NYC housing woes and is excited to revive the website and share all the great cheap and free things to do in New York City! BUT the Cheap Chick is giving the website a reboot: “Living Large in NYC on a $1 a Day or Less.” We will see how this new format goes, if it doesn’t work, she’ll go back to the OG NYC event postings.

Again, thank you to all who found me after my appearance on #TheRehearsal with Nathan Fielder.  The Cheap Chick in the City could still really use your help, esp since she only recently started a new job and is still navigating the NYC housing market, so if you want to buy her a cup of coffee or a cup of orange juice, no pulp 😉 or just support the website, you can Venmo her via @Patricia-Couture-3. In 1918, Ford purchased a newspaper, The Dearborn Independent, where he published antisemitic articles that would later become four volumes titled The International Jew. Based on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, which described an international ruling conspiracy, the article series alleged that such a conspiracy was infiltrating America. These articles ran from 1920 to 1924, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers and legitimizing ideas that otherwise may have remained on the fringe.”

“CBH TALK | VOICES FROM NEW NETHERLANDS: UNSEALING THE VROOMAN LETTERS”
6:30 p.m.
CENTER FOR BROOKLYN HISTORY, 128 PIERREPONT STREET, BK
“The Dutch scholar Frans R.E. Blom had an experience that every historian dreams of. He was the first to open and read sealed documents of historic significance that were centuries old – in his case letters written by Dutch migrants newly settled in the colony of New Netherlands. The letters, written by members of the Vrooman family, are part of a vast collection known as The Prize Papers.

Penned in the mid-1600 in what was then New Netherlands, the Vroomans wrote home to share the struggles, concerns, and minutiae of their daily lives. The letters were intercepted at sea by the British and sat unopened for centuries in the Tower of London and then the British National Archives. They hold a wealth of information about the personal experiences and emotional reality of ordinary Dutch migrants, and include the rare voice of a woman, Geetruijt, or Gertrude, Weckmans-Vrooman.

As New York City acknowledges the 400 years since the Dutch first set foot on this land, join Blom for an illustrated exploration of letters that are as ordinary as they are remarkable. He brings to light the experiences of one family caught within the global entanglements of the early modern world.”

This is the neighborhood where Alexander Hamilton built his country home, George Gershwin wrote his first hit, a young Norman Rockwell discovered he liked to draw, and Ralph Ellison wrote Invisible Man. Through words and pictures, Hamilton Heights and Sugar Hill traces the transition of this picturesque section of Harlem from lush farmland in the early 1600s to its modern-day growth as a unique Manhattan neighborhood highlighted by stunning architecture, Harlem Renaissance gatherings, and the famous residents who called it home.”

The project aims to change behavior by shifting perceptions of the problem of litter and the act of cleaning up through unconventional and eye-catching means. Over time, the project evolved from a social art project into a series of monthly park cleanups in Manhattan’s St. Nicholas Park, an extension of the artist’s studio, and other public spaces around the world. “
